A Bit of Background About Our Chapter
The Wichita Kansas Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was established March 9, 1935 at the home of Dorothy Odell Terrell on North Water. Naomi Cherot, a national officer from Kansas City, KS established the chapter with assistance of Beatrice Penman, also a national officer. This chapter was given the Greek name “Alpha Phi,” a mixed chapter composed of graduates and undergraduates.
The principal aims of Alpha Phi, were cultural, intellectual and moral standards among its members to foster high goals, establish a closer union among college women and assists its members in every way possible. The first president of the chapter was Pauline Beatty. Writers of Alpha Phi’s Constitution and By-Laws were Carrie L. Burney, Chairman, Edna Sweich, Katherine Geeder, Dorothy Odell Terrell and Pauline Beatty.
